A wide variety of lightweight and loose weave fabrics can be used for nuno felting. Depending on the type, using silk for nuno felting gives the end product a wonderful drape and sheen. The lighter the fabric, the better the drape, while heavier fabrics produce more defined puckering. While there are exceptions, silk up to 6 momme can be nuno felted. The higher the momme rating of silk, the heavier the weight and weave density.
Our silks come from Uzbekhistan and are the lightest silks available. Margilan rarefied silk gauze/ or scrim weighs around 8 gm per sq metre, equivalent to less than 2.5 momme. The extremely loose weave easily allows the wool fibres to migrate through the fabric. Unlike silk chiffon or georgette, it has a wonderful lustre.
Being around 3.5 momme Uzbek silk gauze compares weight-wise with light chiffon, georgette or tissue silk. With similar sheen to Paj or 5 momme habotai, using Uzbek silk gauze has the advantage of sheen and minimal weight.
