silk for felting

Silk for felting needs to be a relatively loose or open weave fabric. The technique of combining fabric and wool roving is referred to as Nuno felting. The wool fibres need to be able to migrate through the weave of the fabric.

Margilan rarefied silk gauze, being the lightest silk available, drapes beautifully when felted. Available in natural and hand dyed options, it retains a lovely sheen. It weighs around 8 gms per square metre.

Another suitable silk fabric  is Uzbek silk gauze. Slightly heavier at around 3.5 momme, it’s natural sheen  is similar to paj or 5 momme habotai .
